In the critically ill newborn, frequent blood sampling from an umbilical artery catheter (UAC) may be necessary. These fragile newborns, whether born pre-mature or ill, require the gentlest of care particularly in preserving their blood. The SafeSample™ Closed Blood Draw Set allows for frequent blood gas sampling from a UAC, without unnecessary trauma to the newborn.

In comparison to using a traditional open stopcock for sampling, the system’s closed valves significantly reduce the “residual volume” in the valve and further contribute to preventing bacterial colonization. The system also reduces blood exposure to the clinician by using closed needleless valves.
